Those who are undergoing chemotherapy, many will experience immediate side effects such as fever, headache, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, stomach pain, etc. or delayed reaction such as mouth sores, loss of appetite, weight loss, hair loss and persistent non-stop HICCUPS.
In my personal experience, the only side effects I experienced were weight loss which has stabilized lately, hair loss but have started to grow after my 5th chemo. Persistent and non-stop HICCUPS was the only side effects that troubles me all throughout which usually appears on the 2nd or 3rd day after my chemo. I had tried every medical and home remedies in the past to no avail until unintentionally, unexpectedly I tried HOLDING MY BREATH WHILE SLOWLY SIPPING AND SWALLOWING SMALL AMOUNT OF LIQUID AT A TIME IN SUCCESSION TO AS LONG AS I CAN, TO THE POINT OF EXPERIENCING A DROWNING SENSATION, THEN STOP SIPPING AND TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND BLOW. THE RELIEF IS IMMEDIATE. Repeat the same procedure for recurrence.

Another important advice. After chemo, one will experience tumorlysis, so one must drink plenty of liquid at least 1500 to 3000 cc to wash out and expel cancer cells in our body, wash our hands afterwards and make sure no urine spillage in the toilet bowl or urinal and flush the toilet bowl after use.

ReplyDeleteI have had good success with taking a sip of water, then laying on my back, taking a deep breath and holding it for 30-60 seconds. If I'm in a public place, I just sit down and tilt my head back instead.

DeleteHooray! WOW I was skeptical when reading Dr. Tang's suggestion. I am 46 and on a high 3 day pump 5FU chemo regiment and days 2 - 3 create random HICCUP madness. Imagine trying to start a group presentation and then come the darn hiccups. We all have to take the cancer treatment side-effects in stride and learn as a survivors community. Found out about a "PRESSURE POINT" that is guareenteed to WORK!!!!Put two fingers on inner side of eye brawl towards nose bridge,and at same time to the exact same to other inner eye brawl,and push for 3 minutes.It took it away so fast,I could hardly believe it.You MUST TRY IT!!!

DeleteMy 18 year old son just finished day 3 of a B.E.P. three week cycle. (first of four cycles) He developed constant Hiccups within an hour of treatment center and has went for 7+ hours. He has some borderline high functioning issues and his first attempt doing this slowed the hiccups down considerably. His second attempt about 10 minutes later worked like a champ! Thanks for posting this Mr Tang, he has a long road ahead of him and this looks like it will ease this first side effect very effectively!

DeleteI am taking Chemo after a colon tumor removed in 10/2014 and colon completion surgery for a second tumor 10.2015. I'm on a two week cycle with a day in the clinic for anti nausea meds and 4 hr infusion of chemo drugs followed by 2 days with a pump with the second chemo drug.
DeleteI started having trouble with hiccups in my second cycle in the days following chemo. At first they were mild but then developed into occasional spasms and "multiple" hiccups, two to five, one after the other in rapid succession. This resulted in a thick bubbly foam working it way up and into my mouth which had to be expelled every 5 to 10 min. They started me on Prilosec twice a day and before my third session it had all subsided. No evidence it was the prilosec.
After my forth session they came back but were relatively mild though constant. They proscribed Thorozine which had no effect and then changed to Reclan a few days later, also with no effect. My 5th of 12 sessions was last week and thing have only gotten worse. I've continued the Reclan despite its lack of effect but with the permission of my doctor i have started taking a Norco tablet (narcotic pain reliever prescribed after my surgery but not used) before bed. That has allowed me about 3 hours of relief and allows me to sleep and rest a bit. I should add that i haven't been able to eat other than a limited amount of liquids for about 5 days. Very little makes it past the hiccups that are pushing everything up instead of down. Also, the hiccups great a wad of foam in my esophagus that builds until nothing can get past it. It puts pressure on my windpipe and I can't breath. I have to force air into my lungs and try to push past the foam and break it loose. It can get a little panicky when it wont do so quickly.
My sister, a Nurse Practitioner, found your site and passed it on to me. I tried your method with only short term effects (30 min relief at most so far) but I'm not sure I'm meeting all the criteria. I hold my nose to try to meet the "hold your breath" part and i drink a large tumbler full of water but never really get to the water boarding point where i feel like I'm going to drown. When you say "sipping" does that mean you are using a straw and one long Continuous pull on the straw? (Haven't tried that yet.)
Also, i would like to hear from others as to how long their relief is after doing this. Is it 30 min, an hour or two, all day? Also, how much water are you actually co suming each time? Because I'm drinking so much water doing this i can only attempt it 2 or 3 times a day before my system is flooded and i can't drink more.

DeleteNo, no, no. You don't drink a the whole large tumbler of water. You make a continuous sipping of a small amount of water using your lips from the mouth of the glass holding your breath until you experience the drowning sensation where you can no longer hold your breath and suddenly take a deep breath and exhale. THE RELIEF IS INSTANT! Repeat if necessay.
NO STRAW! Holding your breath, slowly sip SMALL AMOUNT of water with your lips and swallow the water from the mouth of the glass until you experience a drowning sensation and can no longer hold no more, take a sudden deep breath and exhale. Wholah! Immediate relief, repeat procedure when needed.
I personally experienced complete relief after one take for days and even up to the next cycle.

ReplyDeleteI've found that a teaspoon of lime juice concentrate immediately stops the hiccups...if they return just repeat simple as that... It's an old bar trick if someone had the hiccups I'd give them two lime wedges to bite and suck and voila! As if magic...they are gone!

He was beyond miserable, and it's awful to watch someone go through this. I made him try your remedy, and I was in shock, it worked immediately! We are both so thankful that you shared this information, he goes through this every cycle. He has high grade, stage 4 neuroendocrine carcinoma, extremely rare cancer, it's a nightmare! Fill a glass with water and drink through two straws...one in the water and one outside the glass....not as easy as you think, but effective for hours at a time. At the moment we are going on 8 hours with no hiccups.....
